 English

ZooNotes is a peer-reviewed, open access, electronic journal, in which scientific articles and reports are published by Bulgarian researchers or by foreign researchers concerning in particular the Bulgarian fauna. The topics of the journal are in the fields of taxonomy, zoogeography and animal ecology, and also can include new species to the fauna of particular areas/countries, newly registered localities of rare, endangered or threatened species, etc. The papers are published in English, or in Bulgarian with an extensive and informative Abstract in English. The publication in the journal is free of charge for the contributing authors.

Bibliographies, monographs, check-lists and catalogs could also be published after approval of the Editorial board as Supplements.

Peer-review process

Submitted manuscripts are reviewed by two independant peer reviewers, unless they are either out of scope or below threshold for the journal.

We ask all authors to provide the contact details (including e-mail addresses) of at least two potential reviewers of their manuscript. These should be experts in their field of study, who will be able to provide an objective assessment of the manuscript. Members of the Editorial Board of the journal can be nominated.

The manuscript revision goes by using “track-changes” and as “insert comments” in the Word document. Also reviewer comments and statements can be written on a separate document or directly in the e-mail to the Editor-in-Chief.

Our goal is to provide a publication process that is objective, efficient, quick and pleasant. Please help us by taking the following steps:

1. If you are asked to review a manuscript, please respond quickly. This will shorten the process.

2. Please do your best to say "Yes." If you do, please make sure to meet the deadline of a maximum of two weeks.

3. If you are not able to do the review, do not have the time to provide an in-depth review, or do not think you can meet the deadline, then please say "No" right away and suggest one or more alternate potential reviewers.

These are simple steps, but they will greatly help reduce delay and will enhance knowledge on the Bulgarian nature, and support science!

Studies conducted on experimental animals must be in accordance with the national or international guidelines of the European Parliament and the Council on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes according to Directive 2010/63/EU.

Publishing Ethics

The publication of an article in a peer-reviewed journal is an essential building block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge. It is a direct reflection of the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. It is therefore important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behavior for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the author, the journal editor, the peer reviewer, the publisher and the society of society-owned or sponsored journals.

An Author Agreement/Declaration is a statement to certify that all authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript being submitted. They warrant that the article is the authors' original work, hasn't received prior publication and isn't under consideration for publication elsewhere.

A Conflict of Interest is defined as a set of conditions in which professional judgment concerning a primary interest, such as the validity of research, may be influenced by a secondary interest, such as financial gain

Further considerations:
• Manuscript has been 'spell checked' and 'grammar checked'
• All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa
• Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)
• A competing interests statement is provided, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare
• Journal policies detailed in this guide have been reviewed
• Referee suggestions and contact details provided, based on journal requirements.
